Strong Season Series: the Fall

Updated: Oct 14, 2020

For this Family Week, we are introducing a new regular series called the “Strong Season Series.” During our Strong Season posts and podcast episodes, we will discuss ways that you can optimize your performance and wellness going into the Fall.

Fuel.

For your fueling, what does Fall mean? Typically, this is when the bounties of nature start to wean. This results in a change in the diversity of fresh foods that are available in the grocery store. This is also the time when Flu Season inevitably ramps up so immune-boosting nutrition, like those Lindsay discussed in her last post, is essential. Of course, the elephant in the room that’s worth mentioning is that Thanksgiving is also around the corner. With the holidays, balancing your performance and wellness goals with enjoying holiday foods can be tested.

Move.

For your movement, what does Fall mean? For our high school athletes and their parents, the Fall sports (that were allowed to operate) are coming to an end. Do you or your child have aches and pains from the season? Or maybe you missed out on your Fall sports and now you’re ramping up for Winter Sports. For our adult runners, race season (virtual and live) is in full force. A lot of us are getting back to the gym and we are finding we have to build back from the time off. Finally, with cooler weather ahead, how can we best prepare to continue activity outside?

Recover.

For your recovery, what does Fall mean? For many, the big issues at hand may be managing the stress of returning to school, a change in routine, the start of flu and holiday season, and the pursuit of finishing this year on a high note. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, now is a great time to enjoy the remaining pleasant Fall weather while developing routines to prepare for the Winter. With the waning daylight hours, it’s essential that you get adequate sleep to manage stress. Lastly, this is a good time to start thinking about your goals for 2021, since we won’t discuss this again until the start of Winter, the week of December 21st.
